Discover the Segarra region and surroundinds

Conquered from the Andalusians in the middle of the eleventh century, the banks of the Sió soon saw the proliferation of a large number of castles and churches. Among the castles that give their name to this route, those of Montcortès (1095), L'Aranyò (1120), Concabella (1031), Les Pallargues (1040) and Ratera stand out. All of them were refurbished in modern times to turn them into castle-palaces. The castle of Concabella houses the Interpretation Centre of the Castles of Sió and the castle of Les Pallargues is also open to the public.

Among the churches, the first of all stands out that of Sant Esteve de Pelagalls, consecrated in 1180, with an original doorway rich in iconography. The churches of San Salvador de Concabella, a 13th-century building with a Romanesque façade, and the small church of Sant Pere de Muller are interesting.

The Route of the Castles of the Sió runs basically through a flat area crossed by the Sió River, dominated by barley and wheat crops. Only the remains of old vineyards and a small irrigation system on the banks of the Sió defy extreme weather and, above all, a significant summer drought that explains the presence of an agrometeorological observatory in the Canós.
